The Golden Age of VPNs: How PornHub is Shaping Online Privacy

The surge in VPN usage across various states in the U.S. appears directly linked to new pornographic age-verification laws implemented in several states, including Florida. Data indicates a staggering 1,150% increase in VPN usage in Florida since January 1, 2025, alongside similar spikes in Utah and Texas.

These laws enforce strict age verification for accessing adult websites, imposing hefty fines for non-compliance. In response, platforms like PornHub have begun blocking access to users from certain states that impose these rules. Instead of a simple acknowledgment of age, the law necessitates the collection of sensitive personal information, such as driver’s licenses, to prove one’s age.

Privacy concerns arise, as the general public likely does not want their porn-viewing habits meticulously documented. If databases containing personal identification are compromised, individuals could face potential exposure and blackmail, which amplifies the risks associated with these laws.

As users in states with such regulations seek ways to bypass restrictions, many turn to VPNs, which can obscure their online presence. However, the law does not specify that accessing porn via a VPN is exempt from penalties, suggesting that enforcement could still pose a risk.

Interestingly, this regulatory trend may inadvertently teach the public more about using VPNs and file-sharing practices, undermining the intended restrictions. The complexity of compliance and the inherent privacy risks may likely push many users to choose less regulated or illicit sources for adult content rather than comply with the rigorous requirements set forth by law.
